We caught up with Dr. John Marcellus of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York at the International Trombone Festival in Aarhus, Denmark in June 2009. This is the private Master Class he gave to British trombonist Marcus Reynolds who experienced a career- and life-changing accident falling off stage in 1997, suffering almost irreparable damage to his embouchure. Marcus then embarked on a long and laborsome convalescence to reach where he is today. In this film, Professor Marcellus takes Marcus back through air stream fundamentals, Bernoulli’s principle of physics and employs a wonderfully illustrative image to describe how the air stream triggers the vibration of the lips. He works with Marcus employing air stream to achieve a full sound in various positions and registers and discusses decibel (dB) levels as they relate to musical dynamics. Dr. Marcellus also demonstrates exactly how much air is necessary in achieving a full sound in every register (and what a sound he has!) and employs various glissandos to help apply the concept of air and steady air stream to the instrument.
